India's EV market hit a historic milestone in June 2026: monthly EV retail sales surpassed 300,000 units for the first time, and penetration crossed the 12% mark for the first time. The electrification process in this South Asian giant is accelerating, and it's taking a different path from China, Europe, or the US — India is following a "bottom-up" approach: two-wheelers and three-wheelers electrify first, with passenger cars following. Charging infrastructure is also catching up quickly, multiplying several times over in just two years, but the gap remains large.

1. Auto Market: 300k+ Monthly Sales, Penetration Above 12%

According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), India's EV retail sales reached 306,220 units in June 2026, up 62.7% year-on-year and hitting an all-time high. More importantly, EV penetration across all new vehicle sales crossed 12% for the first time, marking India's transition from early adopter phase to mass market adoption.

India's electrification structure is very distinctive, different from any other major market. Two-wheelers and three-wheelers are the main drivers of electrification, while passenger cars account for the smallest share. In June, electric two-wheeler sales were approximately 194,000 units, accounting for over 63% of total EV sales; electric three-wheelers were about 76,000 units, nearly 25% share; while electric passenger vehicles were only about 32,000 units, just over 10%.

By segment, three-wheelers are the most electrified vehicle category in India, with penetration already reaching 64%, as three-wheelers are mainly used for urban delivery and short-distance passenger transport — operating scenarios perfectly suited for electrification. Two-wheeler penetration has also broken 10%, reaching 10.6%, up more than 3 percentage points year-on-year. Passenger vehicles, while smaller in volume, are growing the fastest — up over 100% year-on-year in June — entering a rapid growth phase.

Rising fuel prices are an important driver of India's electrification. International oil prices rose about 30% in the past month, significantly increasing the operating cost of ICE vehicles and noticeably strengthening consumer willingness to switch to EVs. India has very high oil import dependence, so fuel price fluctuations hit consumers particularly hard — this is a key driver of electrification in India.

2. Brand Landscape: Tata Leads, Mahindra Rising Fast

The electric passenger vehicle market is relatively concentrated, with domestic brands dominating. Tata Motors sold 12,223 units in June with 38.9% market share, firmly in first place. Mahindra is growing very rapidly, with 7,646 units sold in June and 24.1% share, up over 120% year-on-year — the fastest growing mainstream brand.

JSW MG (SAIC MG's Indian joint venture) ranks third, with approximately 7,000+ units sold in June and about 22% share. Chinese and Asian brands like BYD and VinFast are also entering the Indian market, and competition will become increasingly fierce in the future. Overall, Indian domestic brands currently hold most of the market share, but foreign brands — especially Chinese brands with strong product capabilities — could significantly change the landscape going forward.

Notably, the alternative fuel share (CNG + Hybrid + EV) in India's passenger vehicle market has already surpassed 40%, reaching 40.35%. This shows that Indian consumers are extremely cost-sensitive — any technology that saves fuel is welcome. CNG, hybrids, and BEVs each have their own markets, forming a diversified technology roadmap.

3. Charging Infrastructure: 4x Growth in Two Years, Still Big Gap

On the charging infrastructure side, India is also making rapid progress. According to official data from India's Ministry of Heavy Industries, as of June 2026, India had 52,718 operational public EV charging stations nationwide, including 16,561 DC fast charging stations. That number was just over 6,500 two years ago (2023) — a fourfold increase in two years, a remarkable growth rate.

The vehicle-to-charger ratio is also steadily improving. India now has over 10 million registered EVs, and the vehicle-to-charger ratio has improved from 1:250 previously to around 1:175 currently. While there's still a large gap compared to China and Europe, the pace of improvement is rapid. DC fast charging share is also rising, currently at about 31%, with high-power charging demand growing quickly along intercity corridors and at logistics hubs.

In terms of regional distribution, India's chargers are highly concentrated in a few economically developed regions. Maharashtra (home to Mumbai), Karnataka (home to Bengaluru), Gujarat, and the Delhi National Capital Region together account for about 63% of the country's public chargers. Charging infrastructure in rural areas and along highways is still very weak, and will be the focus of future construction. This creates significant demand for EV charging station deployment and DC fast charger solutions from leading ev charger manufacturers China.

Regarding charging standards, CCS2 is the mainstream standard in India, along with local standards like Bharat DC001. The Indian government has been promoting charging standard unification, and will gradually converge toward CCS2. For EV charger manufacturers, supporting CCS2 is a basic requirement for entering the Indian market — whether for DC fast charger, wallbox EV chargers, or smart EV charger products.

4. Industry Trends and Opportunities

Overall, India's NEV and EV charger market has several very distinct characteristics:

First, the market is growing fast and is on the verge of explosion. 62.7% YoY growth and 12% penetration — this stage is very similar to China around 2018-2019, and the next few years will likely see accelerated growth. India has 1.4 billion people and a large automotive market base — once electrification takes off, the incremental volume will be enormous.

Second, the electrification path is unique, penetrating from the bottom up. Unlike China, Europe, and the US, which started with passenger cars, India is electrifying two-wheelers and three-wheelers first, with passenger cars following. This means India's charging demand structure is also different — there's huge demand for low-speed, low-power charging, while fast charging demand for commercial scenarios is also growing rapidly.

Third, the charging infrastructure gap is large, and construction demand is strong. Although it has quadrupled in two years, 50,000+ chargers for 10+ million EVs still means a high vehicle-to-charger ratio, especially on highways and in rural areas where the gap is even larger. India's charger construction will maintain rapid growth over the next few years, representing a major market opportunity for EV charger manufacturers and EV charging solution providers.

Fourth, price sensitivity is high, and cost-effectiveness is key. Indian consumers are extremely price-sensitive — for both EVs and chargers, value for money comes first. This is why Chinese EV charger products are very competitive in India — good quality at reasonable prices, perfectly matching the needs of the Indian market. Products like wallbox EV chargers, portable EV chargers, and smart EV charger solutions with strong cost-performance are particularly well-positioned.
