Global EV Charging Infrastructure Review — H1 2026

The global EV charging market continued its rapid growth trajectory in the first half of 2026. The total number of public charging points surpassed 12 million units worldwide, with DC fast charging share rising to 38.5%. China continues to lead the global market, but Europe, Southeast Asia, and India are also accelerating their deployment. Overall, the industry is shifting from "availability" to "speed and quality" — high-power fast charging, smart operations, and liquid cooling technology have become the key industry themes.

1. Market Size: 12M+ Public Chargers, 3M+ Added in Half a Year

According to industry statistics, as of Q2 2026, the global stock of public EV charging points has surpassed 12 million units, up more than 3 million from approximately 8.8 million at the end of 2025 — a half-year increase of over 36%. This growth rate is even faster than the 33% full-year growth in 2025, indicating that global charging infrastructure deployment is accelerating further.

Looking at the growth curve over the past few years, the expansion of the global charging market has been remarkable. In 2020, there were only about 1.3 million public charging points worldwide. By 2023, that number surpassed 5.6 million, reached 8.8 million in 2025, and broke 12 million in H1 2026. That's nearly a tenfold increase in six years, and the growth rate is still accelerating with no signs of slowing down.

Private chargers represent an even larger market. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global stock of private chargers reached 43 million in 2025, with home charging accounting for 75% of all charging sessions. Including private chargers, the total number of EV chargers worldwide has exceeded 55 million units, growing at a rate of over 10 million per year.

2. Regional Landscape: China Leads with 62.5%, Emerging Markets Surge

In terms of regional distribution, China remains the world's largest charging market, accounting for approximately 62.5% of global public charging points. As of the end of June 2026, China's total EV charging infrastructure reached 23.057 million units, including 5.009 million public chargers (up 22.3% YoY) and 18.048 million private chargers (up 50.4% YoY).

Europe is the second-largest market with approximately 1.36 million public charging points, accounting for about 17% of the global total. Germany has surpassed 200,000 units and France is close to 200,000. Driven by the AFIR regulation, ultra-fast charging networks along highway corridors are expanding rapidly. North America has about 253,000 public charging ports, representing roughly 3.2% of the global total. While the total is not large, deployment is accelerating following the NACS standard unification.

Emerging markets have been particularly impressive. India now has 52,718 public charging stations — a fourfold increase in just two years — and its vehicle-to-charger ratio has improved from 1:250 to 1:175. Southeast Asia's five major countries have approximately 280,000 public chargers, with Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam all growing over 50%. The Middle East and Latin America are also accelerating deployment, with fast charging networks in Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and Mexico expanding noticeably.

3. Structure Upgrade: Fast Charging Nears 40%, High-Power Trend Clear

The charging market is not just growing in volume — its structure is also rapidly upgrading. As of H1 2026, DC fast charging points account for 38.5% of global public chargers, up 6.2 percentage points from the same period in 2025. While AC slow charging still holds the majority, DC fast charging is growing significantly faster and is becoming the main driver of new installations.

High-power capability is the core trend in fast charging. Ultra-fast chargers (150kW+) now account for 15% of the total, with unit volume growing over 30% year-on-year. Tesla V4 Superchargers, IONITY's 350kW liquid-cooled stations in Europe, and China's 480kW supercharging arrays are all being deployed at an accelerating pace. As 800V high-voltage platform vehicles become more common, consumer demand for charging speed is increasing, and high-power DC fast charger solutions have moved from "premium feature" to "standard requirement."

Liquid cooling technology is also becoming more widespread. Traditional air-cooled chargers often derate in high-temperature environments, while liquid cooling is 3-5 times more efficient, maintaining full power output even in hot weather. Most DC fast chargers above 240kW now use liquid cooling, with lighter, safer liquid-cooled cables that deliver a better user experience. This creates significant opportunities for ev charger manufacturers China that can deliver advanced liquid-cooled DC fast charger and EV charging station solutions.

4. Standards & Technology: NACS Adoption Accelerates, Smart Charging Becomes Standard

On the standards front, the world is moving toward "fewer standards, more compatibility." Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Australia have largely converged on CCS2. In North America, NACS is rapidly replacing CCS1 — in Q2 2026, NACS accounted for 22.9% of new non-Tesla DC fast chargers, and all major automakers have announced NACS support. China primarily uses GB/T while also actively promoting the internationalization of the ChaoJi ultra-fast charging standard.

Smartification is another important trend. Today's EV charger is no longer just a "plug-and-charge" device — it's an intelligent terminal. The OCPP protocol has become the industry standard, supporting remote monitoring, dynamic load balancing, scheduled charging, and V2G bidirectional charging. AI predictive maintenance is also being deployed, using data analytics to detect faults early and reduce charger downtime. Smart EV charger capabilities are now expected rather than optional.

5. H2 2026 Outlook

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, there are several key trends to watch in the global charging market:

First, the total is expected to surpass 14 million units. At the H1 growth rate, global public charger additions in 2026 could exceed 5 million units, with the year-end total likely reaching 14 million or more. China, Europe, and North America will continue to contribute the majority of growth, but emerging markets in Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and Latin America will steadily increase their share.

Second, DC fast charging share will exceed 40%. The deployment of high-power fast chargers continues to accelerate, especially along highways, in urban core areas, and at logistics hubs where demand is strongest. By the end of 2026, DC fast charging is expected to account for over 40% of global public chargers, with ultra-fast charging (150kW+) approaching 20%.

Third, solar-storage-charging integration becomes a new hotspot. As electricity prices fluctuate and grid pressure increases, integrated "solar + storage + charging" stations are becoming more common. This model reduces electricity costs, improves grid stability, and can participate in demand response — an important direction for future EV charging solutions.

Fourth, Chinese charger exports continue to grow strongly. Chinese EV charger manufacturers have clear advantages in technology, cost, and production capacity, and are accelerating their overseas expansion. Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America are all important export markets for Chinese chargers, and the NACS standard unification is further opening the North American market. For ev charger manufacturers China, the overseas market opportunity over the next few years is enormous — whether for wallbox EV chargers, portable EV chargers, or commercial DC fast charging solutions.
