Europe's three largest automotive markets showed impressive performance. Germany's BEV registrations reached 88,724 units in September, nearly doubling year-on-year, with market share rising to 34.6%, mainly driven by the restart of purchase subsidies in 2026 and a low base effect from the same period last year. France recorded 65,243 BEV registrations with a market share of 41.7%, leading among major European markets. The UK saw BEV sales grow 43% year-on-year, with market share at approximately 45.3%, demonstrating strong growth momentum.

The Netherlands and Sweden achieved BEV penetration rates of 53% and 49% respectively, placing them in Europe's second tier. Notably, Europe's electrification process shows significant gradient differences: Nordic countries have entered a mature stage, major Western European markets are in a rapid growth phase, while Southern and Eastern European countries remain in the early stages, offering enormous future growth potential.

3. Brand Competition: Tesla's Quarter-End Push, BYD Close Behind

September's European BEV brand competition presented a landscape of "two leaders running ahead, multiple strong players chasing." Tesla sold 52,923 units across 14 European countries, with a total of 55,702 units in nine countries, up 77.3% year-on-year and capturing an 11.7% market share. Affected by the quarter-end concentrated delivery cycle, Tesla's September sales surged 339% month-on-month, showing typical quarter-end volume-pushing characteristics. The Model Y topped the single-model sales charts in Germany and several other markets.

BYD followed closely with 41,372 units, surpassing Tesla in three of the 14 countries. BYD's growth momentum in Europe is strong, with French market sales surging 270% year-on-year. Chinese brands as a whole continue to increase their share in Europe. In Q3 2026, Chinese brands captured 12.1% of Germany's BEV market, up more than 50% from 8.0% in the same period last year. Approximately 39,500 Chinese-brand BEVs were registered in Germany during the quarter, up 168% year-on-year.

Among traditional European automakers, the Volkswagen Group continues to maintain its leading position in Europe's EV market, delivering 6 million vehicles cumulatively from January to September, with the proportion of all-electric models continuously increasing. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi also showed stable performance in the EV sector. However, facing dual pressure from Tesla and Chinese brands, European traditional automakers' market share is facing continuous challenges.

4. Charging Infrastructure: Public Charging Points Exceed 1.17 Million, Wallbox and DC Fast Charger Segments Expand

According to data from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO), as of August 2026, the number of public charging points in 13 EU member states reached 1,170,493. Data from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) shows that by the end of Q2 2026, the total number of public charging points in Europe was approximately 1.2 million, up about 15% from 1.04 million in the same period of 2025.

In terms of charging type structure, level 2 AC chargers (including wallbox EV chargers for residential and workplace use) still dominate the installed base, but DC fast charger deployment is growing faster. From Q2 2025 to Q2 2026, AC charging points in Europe grew by approximately 12%, while DC fast charging points showed even more significant growth. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), as of June 2026, Europe's total public charging capacity reached 41.6 GW, up 29% year-on-year, with approximately 195,082 public charging stations (May 2026 data), up 21% year-on-year. Portable EV chargers represent a growing complementary segment for European drivers seeking flexible charging solutions.

The Netherlands, Germany, France, the UK, and Belgium are the five countries with the most developed public charging networks in Europe, collectively accounting for the majority of Europe's public charging points. Despite the continuous expansion of charging infrastructure, ACEA points out that Europe's charging network still has significant regional imbalances, with charging density in Eastern and Southern European countries far lower than in Western and Northern Europe, which remains a key factor constraining EV adoption in these regions.

5. Trends and Outlook

First, Europe's EV market is entering an accelerated adoption phase. September's 70% YoY BEV registration growth and 32%+ market share mark Europe's transition from early adoption to mass market penetration. Full-year European BEV sales are expected to exceed 2.5 million units.

Second, Chinese brands will continue to gain share in Europe. BYD, NIO, XPeng and other Chinese brands are seeing rapid sales growth in Europe, with continuously improving product strength and brand recognition. Chinese brands have already surpassed 12% share in core markets like Germany, with room for further growth.

Third, charging infrastructure construction needs to accelerate. Although Europe's public charging points have exceeded 1.17 million, relative to the rapidly growing EV fleet, regional imbalances and insufficient fast charging coverage remain constraints. The implementation of the EU AFIR regulation will drive countries to accelerate charging network deployment.

Fourth, the trend of BEV replacing PHEV is clear. BEVs accounted for 71.3% of NEV sales in September. As BEV range improves, prices drop, and charging networks expand, pure electric vehicles will gradually replace plug-in hybrids as the market mainstream.

6. Implications for EV Charger Exports and Global Sourcing

The accelerating adoption of EVs in Europe sends clear market signals to global EV charger manufacturers and buyers. First, with BEV registrations surging 70% year-on-year and market share exceeding 32%, demand for charging infrastructure will grow in tandem. In terms of product structure, residential charging in Europe is dominated by wallbox EV chargers, while public charging is rapidly shifting toward DC fast charger solutions — buyers should prioritize product portfolios covering both segments.

Second, the EU AFIR regulation sets mandatory deployment targets: by the end of 2025, the core road network must have at least one 400 kW charging station every 60 km. This will directly drive procurement demand for high-power DC fast chargers. AFIR also mandates ad-hoc payment and transparent pricing for all public chargers, raising the bar for payment module integration and smart charging management systems.

Third, the rising share of Chinese automakers in Europe has drawn increasing attention to Chinese EV charger supply chains for their cost and delivery capabilities. When evaluating suppliers, CE certification, OCPP protocol compatibility, and local technical support are core assessment dimensions for European buyers. Level 2 EV chargers and portable EV chargers remain high-volume entry categories for distributors building local market presence.
